Allan Ramsay was born in Edinburgh, where he studied at the Academy of St Luke. He visited Italy several times, and worked in his native Edinburgh and in London, where he soon achieved fame as a portraitist. His paintings of women were particularly admired. This beautiful portrait is a firm favourite with visitors.
