Artists do like to be beside the seaside. Ever the same, and never the same,the sea in all its moods has inspired painters throughout the centuries. Gordon examines some fine examples drawn from the permanent collection.

A Frenchman in London: Jacques-Emile Blanche Rodney Anness

Much admired for his portraits, Jacques-Emile Blanche (1861-1942) recorded the London of the early twentieth century with a loving eye.

Death & Religion in The Art of The Netherlands Terry Gallogly

In the Netherlands of seventeenth century there were those alarmed by the contemporary preoccupation with things material. The Vanitas is a highly symbolic representation of the transcience of life compared with the spiritual and eternal. Terry explains the background, and unravels the intricacies in the work of Juriaen van Streek (1632-1687), a remarkable exponent of this art.

Anne has chosen to discuss two conrasting works from the collection: the exuberant and opulent Banquet by Abraham van Beyeren (1621-1690) and the benedictive richness of Still Life with Lemons and Nuts by Luis Meléndez (1716-1780).
