YORK ART GALLERY LUNCHTIME TALKS

Late Spring Season 2009

Every First Wednesday of The Month, 12.30-1.00pm

February 4

Stanley SpencerBrian Kesteven

The astonishing talent of Stanley Spencer (1891-1956) was evident from his student days, but his single-minded devotion to Cookham, where he was born and lived, and the expression of his ideas through a literal interpretation of Christian imagery puzzled even his admirers. Since his death, he has been recognised as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. His singularity has led to abstruse psychological explanations of his paintings, but these extraordinary works are best appreciated simply for what they are.

March 4

Cityscapes and The Evelyn Bequest Anne Hall

John Linnell scorned to be thought a mere topographer. As with landscapes, townscapes allow a great deal of latitude for personal artistic interpretation. The Evelyn bequest funded some notable examples.

April 1

Ways of LookingRodney Anness

Rodney revisits one of York's most popular paintings to show that even in the most familiar works the subtle language of art may still challenge, and permit varied interpretations.

The Christian Tradition William Dixon Smith

For Humanists and even many modern day Christians, the Christian art of the Medieval and Renaissance periods is a foreign country. They did things differently there. Yet we inhabit the same world, with the same intellectual problems and the same mysteries.

The Flagellation of St Barbara
