Background and history (2)
The inaugural meeting of Poppleton Gardens' Guild took place on 27th November 1957 at a meeting attended by 40 local enthusiasts at which officers were elected, subscriptions agreed and an offer of storage for store goods agreed: it is interesting to note that the garden store was central to the Guild right from the start.  The first AGM followed shortly afterwards in January 1958 which marked the formal beginning of the Guild.

The first flower and vegetable show was held on 29th August, 1959 and by the following year membership of the Guild was up to 262.

A building fund was started in 1959 as a permanent site for the storage and sale of garden materials was needed and by 1962 the current hut had been erected and was trading briskly.

In 1975 the Parish Council asked for the Guild's assistance in mapping all the trees in Poppleton in order that the appropriate tree preservation orders could be developed. As the Guild had already been responsible for buying and planting many of them, this was an obvious home for the work.

The Annual Show continues to prosper, though this is actually not the right word as, by intention, the show breaks even over time. The show regularly attracts over 300 exhibits and, in 1993, entries peaked at 520.

2008 sees the 50th anniversary of the Guild and there seems little to stand in the way of its continued success.
