REMAP (YORK PANEL)

Technical Help for the Disabled

REMAP is a National Charity making one-off devices for the disabled under the guidance of care professionals through 109 Panels in the UK. The National body comprises a National Organiser and three part-time staff who provide information, publicity and legal advice. REMAP has insurance cover for all activities.

The York Panel has 15 members, including three Occupational Therapists. Members are mainly retired craftsmen and DIY practicioners. Monthly meetings are held at the Yearsley Bridge Social Services facility at 3.00pm on the second Tuesday of the month. Our work must conform to the Medical Devices Directive 1998. Cases are mostly brought to panel meetings from Therapists working in the area. A Panel member visits the client with the originating Care Worker to discuss the problem and seek a possible solution. The work tends to be simple and “low tech” calling for lateral thinking and a great deal of ingenuity. We are perhaps best described as “gadget makers”.

Local funding is by donation and a small grant from the City of York Council. Volunteers are re-imbursed for the cost of materials and traveling expenses.
